So, we went to the humane society and to animal control to get a dog. Didn't get one :( Most of them were too big, or too old, or too young. (Yes, I know I am picky) We did see a one we liked, but they told us she had heartworms and it would take a whole bunch of money to treat her. So, we are still dogless. But we shall keep looking. And I searched online and got email addresses for some of the local breed rescue groups (I'd prefer either a boston terrier or a french bull, but anything that needs a home is fine). Once I finally do get a dog, I will post pics for all to see!
